7. februára 2008 sa v rámci konferencie Aplimat 2008 v Bratislave po druhý krát uskutočnila jednodenná konferencia Otvorený softvér vo vede a vzdelávaní. Odznelo na nej celkove 14 príspevkov, ktoré pokrývali široký rozsah tém od budovania terminálových sietí a vyučovania v prvých ročníkoch základných škôl až po témy venované univerzitám a použitiu OSS vo výskume.
Ako organizátori akcie by sme radi poďakovali všetkým účastníkom, či už prezentujúcim alebo poslucháčom. V hľadisku ich tentokrát bolo okolo päťdesiat, čo považujeme za úspech. Rovnako chceme poďakovať všetkým, ktorí nám pri organizovaní konferencie pomohli, bez nich by sa akcia neuskutočnila. V prvom rade Monike Kováčovej a ostatným organizátorom Aplimatu, ktorí nám vytvorili vynikajúce podmienky a odbremenili nás od väčšiny organizaćnej práce, recenzentom za posudky príspevkov, Ladislavovi Ševčovičovi za zostavenie zborníka v profesionálnej kvalite, etkimu a pestrovi za spústu administrátorskej práce na stránke sk.openacademu.eu a za jej nový vzhľad, a napokon, všetkým, ale nielem im, ktorí nám pomohli s propagovaním akcie na svojich stránkach.
Počas konferencie začala aj diskusia o tom, ako pokračovať. Jedným z návrhov je jej presun do Žiliny, kde by bola lepšie prístupná pre učiteľov zo stredného a východného Slovenska. Druhou otázkou je jej najvhodnejší termín. V prvý júlový týždeň či na jeseň? Ce týždeň či cez víkend? Počkáme na vaše návrhy.

Dynamic geometry with the Compass and Ruler (C.a.R.) program
Abstract. Currently there are many high quality open source alternatives to computer programs like Cabri Geometry. This paper concentrates on one such alternative, the C.a.R. program. In addition to basic information about the program and its comparison to similar programs the paper offers also an example of an in-class usage of C.a.R. to solve one of generalized Apollonius problems.

Course of Cryptography using Open Source software.
Abstract. Cryptography and computer security areas are very important not only for students and Computer Science specialists, but also for all Internet users, who should have the basic knowledge of cryptography and security principles. Indeed, the teaching of cryptographic algorithms is not imaginable without using computers. Thus, we cannot bypass the question of suitable programming tools for the above mentioned goal. The motivation of students is very important, so we need simple development environment, in which the principles and quirks of cryptography can be shown by funny, interesting ways. In the same time, the tools should be such that more capable students can experiment with in-depth study of algorithms. Open Source software is the right choice, because we can choose from many implementations of functional cryptographic algorithms and on the other side, we can see the source, where the details of implementation are available for study and inspiration.

Quartet game with penguin utilizing voice control to teach 1-st grade kids digits in elementary schools
Abstract. In this article Linux application Penguin Quart (quartet game with penguin) is presented. The game demonstrates utilization of a voice communication interface in kids education. Development of such applications requires to collect and process speech patterns. Thanks to the application sound patterns of digits was collected and a voice control interface was subsequently created. Also experiments of the game utilization at an elementary school is presented in this contribution.

LATEX AND UNUSUAL FIXED POINT COMPUTATIONS
Abstract.
For many of LATEX users it is sufficient to use this powerful system like advanced text processor, but there are also power users which can do many interesting things using LATEX programming features. In this contribution we will show some of LATEX capabilities, which enable us to prepare examination materials for students. The way of LATEX programming is not the simplest one, nor it is very elegant, but can be interesting and instructive, showing the power of LATEX language also in non-traditional areas of general computing, not only for text layout and processing.

POSSIBILITIES TO USE OPEN SOURCE SOFTWARE FREE PASCAL FOR TEACHING AND RESEARCH AT UNIVERSITIES
Abstract. In this paper we present some ideas about usage of the Free Pascal Open Source software at Slovak universities and namely at University of Žilina. According to opinions of experts for education, it is required to transform our universities on to research universities, what leads us to change our goals. What kind of graduates we should produce? How can we achieve this efficiently? The transformation process to the knowledge economy must project itself also to education. The limits of our today's economy naturally have to have their own projection to the methodology of “how” and “with what means” to do this process.

About open-source solvers based on FEM
Abstract. Author of the paper tries to zoom in the four chosen open-source solvers based on finite element method, which could be used for numerical analyses in both education or scientific work. Detailed description of work and some results from focused solvers are also given. The author’s approach is to give a look from the common user, “consumer“, of FEM tools, so only general pieces of information are mentioned. The list containing about 70 particular software tools and main internet pages dealing with open-source numerical analyses software can also be found in the paper.

LET’S GO TO PLAY WITH PDF IN EDUCATION
Abstract. Portable document format (PDF), is one of the most widespread cross platform standards used mainly (but not only) to store and interchange informations on the Internet. This format provides an electronic replacement for classical paper materials or slides used with data projector. In this paper, we discuss several possibilities how to enrich teaching materials in PDF using JavaScript language implemented in Adobe Reader and get more attractive and more interesting teaching materials, including some didactic games for students. The techniques described in the paper, can be used in education at schools of any specialization and at any level of the education system.

PYTHON AS A FIRST PROGRAMMING LANGUAGE FOR UNIVERSITIES
Abstract. For teaching of algorithms, data structures and programming at the beginners level there is the need for simple programming tools, which do not stay on the students way to the solution of the interesting, real problems on computers. The programming language Python with simple, clear syntax, many ready-made modules (libraries), automatic memory management and the possibility of object-oriented programming is very capable as the first language for the Computer Science students and also for non-programmers, who are studying various subjects is science and engineering. In this article we will show the advantages and disadvantages of using Python on the base of numerous Internet articles and discussions and also on the base of our experience gained by teaching several mathematical and computer science courses.

Data processing in physics with open source program R
Abstract. R is an open-source statistical environments modeled after S language. R has many function for statistical analyses and graphics. The results from a statistical analyses are displayed on the screen, some intermediate results can be saved, written in a file, or used in subsequent analyses. R could seem too complex for a~non-specialist. This may not be true actually, a main feature of R it's flexibility. Classical software displays immediately the results of an analysis, R stores these results in an ”object“, so that an analysis can be done with no result displayed. We will see some examples of statistical models for analysis the data from an physics experiment illustrating the flexibility of a system such as R. This contribution covers several topics in data analysis, including curve fitting and presentation of the results of analysis by LaTeX typographical system. R is freely distributed under the terms of the GNU GPL licence.

Sukoku – game or location problem?
Abstract. We had like to share our experience gained by solving popular puzzle Sudoku and its modifications as location problem in the Gnumeric spreadsheet. This approach found a good feedback among students. It motivated them to reflect upon the possibility of modeling real optimization problems using mathematical programming and freely available LP solvers.

TERMINAL SOLUTION, LINFUN PROJECT AND OPEN SOURCE AT THE FFWT
Abstract. The paper deals with building of terminal solution as a kind of information infrastructure at the Department of wood science, respectively at the whole Faculty of Forestry and Wood Technology (FFWT) MUAF in Brno. Main advantages and disadvantages of such a solution for both end-users and system administrator, faculty respectively, are given. Terminal solution is mostly based on open-source technology. A list of most used applications as well as technical details of hardware equipment is given too. The concept of transformation of university-like institution to open-source technology is presented in project called LinFUN. The helpdesk system, which is one of main parts of the project is also mentioned.

Reading with penguin employing speech communication interface to develop kids reading skills in elementary schools
Abstract. In this article a Linux education application Reading with penguin is presented. It is employing a computer Slovak language speech recognition to check if kids have read presented story correctly. Reading is going on by clicking on words of the story and by subsequent response of computer. Stories can be changed but it requires some preprocessing stage. Used computer recognizer is deciding among words from a recognition dictionary what contains minimally all words from a story.
